Vivo in Italia, a Roma.

I live in Italy, in Rome.

Vado da Marco.

I'm going to Marco's place.

Arrivo tra cinque minuti.

I arrive in five minutes.

Achte auf die hervorgehobenen Teile. Was haben sie gemeinsam?

Italian has eight short prepositions that do most of the work: di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra / fra. They do not line up one-to-one with English "of, to, from, in": each covers a different patch, so learn them in phrases rather than as single translations.

PrepositionMain meaningsExamples
diof, 's, from (home town), aboutil libro di Marco - Marco's book, Sono di Palermo. - I'm from Palermo.
ato, at, in (towns)Vado a scuola. - I go to school. Abito a Milano. - I live in Milan.
dafrom, at / to someone's place, since, for (time)Il treno arriva da Roma. Vado da Marco. - I'm going to Marco's.
inin, to (countries, regions, rooms), by (transport)Vivo in Italia. Vado in treno. - I'm going by train.
conwithEsco con Maria. - I'm going out with Maria.
suon, aboutun libro su Leonardo - a book about Leonardo
perfor, through, in order toQuesto è per te. - This is for you.
tra / frabetween, among, in (time from now)Arrivo tra cinque minuti. - I'll be there in five minutes.

Tra and fra mean the same; pick the one that sounds better (fra tre giorni, avoiding tra tre).

"In" a place: a or in?

  • a + town or city: a Roma, a Firenze, a Londra
  • in + country, region or large island: in Italia, in Toscana, in Sardegna (small islands take a: a Capri, a Ischia)
  • in + rooms and many places: in cucina - in the kitchen, in banca, in farmacia, in centro
  • a with a few fixed places: a casa - at home, a scuola, a teatro, a letto - in bed

English uses "in" for all of these, which is why *in Roma is such a common mistake.

Two uses of da English speakers miss

  • At / to someone's place - da + a person: Ceniamo da Luca. - We're having dinner at Luca's. Vado dal medico. - I'm going to the doctor's. A trattoria called Da Gino is "Gino's".
  • For how long, with the present tense: Studio italiano da due anni. - I've been studying Italian for two years. English needs the present perfect; Italian uses the present, because the studying is still going on. Ho studiato italiano per due anni would mean you have stopped.

Confusing a (to/at cities) with in (in countries/regions). Also, da means 'from' AND 'at someone's place' — a unique Italian usage. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Struggle with a/in distinction for places (English uses 'in' for both). Also, da = at someone's place (vado da Marco) has no English equivalent.

Vivo in Italia, a Roma.

I live in Italy, in Rome.

In + Land, a + Stadt. Dieses Muster merken.

Vado da Marco.

I'm going to Marco's place.

Da + Person = zu/bei jemandem (einzigartig italienisch).

Arrivo tra cinque minuti.

I arrive in five minutes.

Tra/fra + Zeitraum = in (Zukunft).
