Essere (essere) è uno dei verbi più importanti in italiano. È irregolare e va memorizzato.

PersonaConiugazioneEsempio
iosonoIo sono italiano.
tuseiTu sei studente.
lui/lei/LeièLei è di Roma.
noisiamoNoi siamo amici.
voisieteVoi siete bravi.
lorosonoLoro sono tedeschi.

Usi principali:

  • Identità: Sono Maria. (Mi chiamo Maria.)
  • Nazionalità/origine: Sono italiano. Sono di Milano.
  • Professione: Sono insegnante. (senza articolo!)
  • Descrizione: È bello. Siamo stanchi.
  • Posizione: Il libro è sul tavolo.

Nota: è (con accento) = 'is'; e (senza accento) = 'and'. Non confonderli!

Confusing è (is) with e (and). Also, 'sono' means both 'I am' and 'they are' — context and verb position clarify. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Forget that professions don't take an article: 'Sono insegnante' (not *Sono un insegnante). Also struggle with è vs e distinction.
