A avea - to have - is short, irregular and everywhere. Present tense:

| noi | avem | Avem bilete. - We have tickets. |

| ei / ele | au | Au doi copii. - They have two children. |
Are has two syllables, "AH-re". It is not the English word "are", and reading it that way is the commonest pronunciation slip with this verb.
Questions need no "do": Ai frați? - Do you have brothers and sisters? Nu am mașină. - I don't have a car.
Several states that English describes with "be" are things you have in Romanian:

| Am răbdare. | I have patience | I'm patient. |
Cold and heat are different again: Mi-e frig. / Mi-e cald. - I'm cold / I'm hot, literally "to me it is cold". *Sunt frig means nothing, and Sunt rece would describe your personality.
The everyday past tense is built from a short form of a avea plus the past participle: Am mâncat sarmale. - I ate (have eaten) sarmale. Two of these helper forms differ from the present tense above, so do not mix them up: el a mâncat (not *are mâncat) and voi ați mâncat (not *aveți mâncat).
