Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Unë punoj në Tiranë.

I work in Tirana.

Ata lexojnë gazen çdo mëngjes.

They read the newspaper every morning.

Ne flasim shqip dhe anglisht.

We speak Albanian and English.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Foljet shqipe ndahen në tri konjugime bazuar në formën e vetës së parë:

Konjugimi I (-j): punoj (I work)

VetëForma
unëpunoj
tipunon
ai/ajopunon
nepunojmë
jupunoni
ata/atopunojnë

Konjugimi II (bashkëtingëllore): hap (I open)

VetëForma
unëhap
tihap
ai/ajohap
nehapim
juhapni
ata/atohapin

Folje të zakonshme: punoj (work), flas (speak), lexoj (read), shkruaj (write), ha (eat), pi (drink), shoh/shikoj (see/watch), dëgjoj (listen).

The 2nd and 3rd person singular are often identical — context determines who is doing the action. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English barely conjugates (I work, you work, he works). Albanian conjugation is much richer — every person has a distinct form.

Common Error Patterns

Applied wrong conjugation pattern to a verb

Check: does the verb end in -j (Class I) or consonant (Class II)?

Wrong personal ending on the verb

Review the conjugation tables for Class I (-j/-n/-n/-jmë/-ni/-jnë) and Class II

Unë punoj në Tiranë.

I work in Tirana.

Punoj = I work (1st conjugation, -j ending). Në = in (preposition).

Ata lexojnë gazetën çdo mëngjes.

They read the newspaper every morning.

Lexojnë = they read (lexoj + -në for 3rd person plural). Gazetën = the newspaper (accusative with definite suffix).

Ne flasim shqip dhe anglisht.

We speak Albanian and English.

Flas (I speak) → flasim (we speak). Dhe = and.
