Do you speak English?

1.unë (I)ne (we)
2.ti (you)ju (you pl./formal)
3. mashkulloreai (he)ata (they m.)
3. femëroreajo (she)ato (they f.)

Përdorimi: Ti është forma joformale (miq, familje). Ju përdoret edhe si formë respekti për një person edhe si shumës. Shqipja dallon gjininë në vetën e tretë edhe në shumës: ata (ata mashkuj) vs ato (ato femra).

Kujdes: Në shqipen e folur, përemri shpesh hiqet sepse mbaresa e foljes tregon vetën: Flas shqip = Unë flas shqip.

Learners forget that Albanian distinguishes gender in 3rd person plural (ata vs ato). Also, Albanian is partially pro-drop — pronouns are often omitted. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Forget the masculine/feminine distinction in 3rd person plural (ata/ato) since English uses 'they' for both.

Common Error Patterns

Used wrong gender pronoun (ata/ato confusion)

Ata = they (masculine/mixed), ato = they (feminine only)

Omitted pronoun where it was needed for clarity

Include pronoun for emphasis or when the verb form is ambiguous

Unë jam nga Shqipëria.

I am from Albania.

Unë (I) + jam (am). Shqipëria = Albania with the definite suffix -a.

Ti flet anglisht?

Do you speak English?

Ti (you informal) + flet (speak, 2nd person singular).

Ata janë studentë.

They (m.) are students.

Ata = they (masculine). For a group of women, use ato.
