Gramática básicaA1

Demonstratives

Three-way demonstrative system (este/esse/aquele)

Learning Goal

Can use three-way demonstratives with correct agreement

Exam Skills:VISC-A1

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Este livro aqui é meu.

This book here is mine.

O que é isso?

What is that?

Aquela montanha é linda.

That mountain (over there) is beautiful.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Uso temporal: Este = presente/futuro (este mês = this month), esse = passado recente (esse dia = that day), aquele = passado distante.

Practice Exercises
Using only one form for all distances (English habit). Forgetting contractions (de este* → deste). Confusing gender agreement. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has only this/that (2-way). Portuguese has 3 levels! Plus gender/number agreement.

Este livro aqui é meu.

This book here is mine.

Este = near the speaker (me). Livro is masculine → este (not esta). Aqui reinforces proximity.

O que é isso?

What is that?

Isso (neuter, near listener) — used when you can't see clearly or point at something near the other person.

Aquela montanha é linda.

That mountain (over there) is beautiful.

Aquela = far from both speaker and listener. Montanha is feminine → aquela (not aquele).
