Gramática básicaA1

Negation

Negation with não, double negation with nunca/nada/ninguém

Learning Goal

Can negate sentences correctly and use double negation

Exam Skills:VISC-A1

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Eu não falo espanhol.

I don't speak Spanish.

Não sei nada.

I don't know anything.

Ninguém fala inglês aqui.

Nobody speaks English here.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

A negação em português é feita com não antes do verbo. Diferente do inglês, a dupla negação é padrão!

PalavraSignificadoExemplo
nãonot, noEu não falo inglês.
nuncaneverEu não vou nunca. / Nunca vou.
nadanothingNão sei nada. / Nada sei.
ninguémnobodyNão vi ninguém. / Ninguém veio.
nenhum/ano, noneNão tenho nenhum livro.
nemneither, norNão como nem carne nem peixe.

Regra: Se a palavra negativa vem DEPOIS do verbo, não é obrigatório: Não sei nada. Se vem ANTES, não é opcional: Nada sei.

BP coloquial: 'Não' pode aparecer no final também: Sei não (I don't know — informal).

Practice Exercises
Avoiding double negation (English habit): 'Não sei nada' is correct, not redundant! Placing não after the verb. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Double negation is ERROR in English but CORRECT in Portuguese! 'I don't know nothing' = Não sei nada = standard.

Eu não falo espanhol.

I don't speak Spanish.

Não directly before the verb. Simple negation — same position as Russian не and Czech ne-.

Não sei nada.

I don't know anything.

Double negation: não + nada. This is STANDARD Portuguese, not an error! Like Russian/Czech.

Ninguém fala inglês aqui.

Nobody speaks English here.

Ninguém before the verb - no 'não' needed. Move it after an intransitive verb and 'não' comes back: Não chega ninguém. Não chega ninguém = 'nobody arrives'.
