Indefinido o imperfecto: cómo elegir

The central A2 contrast: completed events versus background, with the verbs that change meaning

Learning Goal

Can choose between preterite and imperfect to tell a past story with events and background

Exam Skills:Expresión escritaExpresión oral

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Estábamos en la sobremesa cuando llamaron del hospital.

We were still sitting around the table after lunch when the hospital called.

Conocía Granada de oídas, pero la conocí de verdad el verano pasado.

I knew of Granada by reputation, but I really got to know it last summer.

Todos los años cenábamos las doce uvas en casa, pero en 2019 las comimos en la Puerta del Sol.

Every year we ate the twelve grapes at home, but in 2019 we ate them in Puerta del Sol.

No pude entrar porque no sabía el código del portal.

I couldn't get in because I didn't know the entry code.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Esta es la decisión más difícil del nivel A2, y no se resuelve traduciendo. Los dos tiempos no cuentan dos hechos distintos: cuentan el mismo hecho desde dos cámaras diferentes.

INDEFINIDO — la cámara que cortaIMPERFECTO — la cámara que acompaña
Hecho terminado: Ayer fuimos al cine.Circunstancia alrededor: Hacía frío y no había nadie.
Acción que hace avanzar la historiaDescripción que la detiene
Número de veces contable: Fui tres veces.Costumbre sin número: Iba los jueves.
Principio o final marcados: Empezó a llover.Proceso en marcha: Llovía.

La estructura que hay que dominar: imperfecto de fondo + indefinido que irrumpe.

Cenábamos tranquilamente cuando se fue la luz. — La cena estaba en marcha (fondo); el apagón la interrumpe (evento).

Cuidado con estos cuatro verbos. No cambian de tiempo: cambian de significado.

VerboImperfectoIndefinido
saberSabía la verdad. (la tenía)Supe la verdad. (me enteré)
conocerConocía a Marta. (la tenía tratada)Conocí a Marta. (nos presentaron)
poderPodía hacerlo. (tenía la capacidad)Pude hacerlo. (lo conseguí)
quererQuería llamarte. (la intención)Quise llamarte. (lo intenté; a menudo sin éxito)

Prueba práctica: si puedes contestar «¿y luego qué pasó?», estás en indefinido. Si el oyente todavía espera que pase algo, estás en imperfecto.

Practice Exercises
Do not translate the tense — reconstruct the speaker's viewpoint. And beware of 'siempre': 'Siempre iba a esa cafetería' is a habit, but 'Siempre te quise' is a closed period. 🇬🇧 English speakers: 'I was eating' helps with the background use, but English past simple covers both Spanish tenses, so 'I lived there for ten years' (viví, closed) and 'I lived there as a child' (vivía, backdrop) look identical in English.

Estábamos en la sobremesa cuando llamaron del hospital.

We were still sitting around the table after lunch when the hospital called.

The classic pairing: imperfect for the ongoing scene (estábamos), preterite for the event that cuts into it (llamaron).

Conocía Granada de oídas, pero la conocí de verdad el verano pasado.

I knew of Granada by reputation, but I really got to know it last summer.

Same verb, two tenses, two meanings: conocía = the state of knowing; conocí = the moment of meeting or discovering.

Todos los años cenábamos las doce uvas en casa, pero en 2019 las comimos en la Puerta del Sol.

Every year we ate the twelve grapes at home, but in 2019 we ate them in Puerta del Sol.

Habit versus one dated occasion, in a single sentence. 'Todos los años' pulls the imperfect; 'en 2019' pulls the preterite.

No pude entrar porque no sabía el código del portal.

I couldn't get in because I didn't know the entry code.

No pude = the attempt failed at a specific moment. No sabía = the state I was in. Swapping them would say something else entirely.
