Presente de subjuntivo: las formas

How the subjunctive is built, and why you already know most of it from the imperative

Learning Goal

Can form the present subjunctive of regular, stem-changing and common irregular verbs

Exam Skills:Comprensión de lecturaExpresión escrita

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

I hope there isn't a long queue at the market.

I want you to meet my parents before Christmas Eve.

I hope we can watch the fireworks from the balcony.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Practice Exercises
Do not build the subjunctive from the infinitive: it comes from the 'yo' form. 'Conocer' has yo conozco, hence conozca — never *conoza. And 'dé' (from dar) carries an accent to distinguish it from the preposition 'de'. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English lost the subjunctive except in fossils ('if I were you'), so the category feels like an invention. Do not look for a translation; learn it as the form that follows certain triggers.

I hope there isn't a long queue at the market.

Haber has its own subjunctive: haya. 'Hay' becomes 'haya' after any trigger.

I want you to meet my parents before Christmas Eve.

conocer → yo conozco → conozcas. The irregularity of the present travels into the subjunctive intact.

I hope we can watch the fireworks from the balcony.

poder → yo puedo → pueda, but nosotros keeps the plain stem: podamos. Stem changes never touch nosotros in -er verbs.
