Building a coherent past narrative: mientras, de repente, entonces, al final, and how the two tenses take turns
Can tell an anecdote in the past, alternating background and events with the right connectors
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
While we were queuing at the on-duty pharmacy, it started to hail.
That summer I was working as a waiter in a beach bar. One day my old teacher turned up and asked me for a beer.
So in the end we missed the train, so we slept at Chamartín and took the first one in the morning.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Practice ExercisesTwo failure modes: telling the whole anecdote in the preterite (a shopping list of events with no atmosphere) or in the imperfect (a description that never gets anywhere). 'Mientras' almost always takes the imperfect; 'de repente' almost always takes the preterite.
While we were queuing at the on-duty pharmacy, it started to hail.
Mientras + imperfect sets the frame; empezó (preterite) marks the moment something changed.
That summer I was working as a waiter in a beach bar. One day my old teacher turned up and asked me for a beer.
The first sentence is the job (background, imperfect); the second is the anecdote (two preterites in sequence).
So in the end we missed the train, so we slept at Chamartín and took the first one in the morning.
Everything after them is preterite: these are the final links in the chain of events.
