Present continuous: estar + gerund (-ando/-iendo) for actions happening right now

Estoy estudiando español.
I am studying Spanish (right now).
¿Qué estás haciendo?
What are you doing?
Los niños están durmiendo.
The children are sleeping.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
El presente continuo describe acciones que están ocurriendo en este momento. Se forma con estar + gerundio.
Formación del gerundio:

Gerundios irregulares comunes:

Uso: Estoy comiendo = I am eating (right now). No confundir con el presente simple: Como a las dos = I eat at two (habitual).
Frases con estar + gerundio:
- Estoy estudiando español ahora mismo.
- ¿Qué estás haciendo? - Estoy cocinando.
- Está lloviendo mucho hoy.
- Estamos viendo una serie nueva.
- Los niños están durmiendo ya.
Estoy estudiando español.
I am studying Spanish (right now).
estar (estoy) + gerund (estudiando). This means right now, at this moment — not a general habit.
¿Qué estás haciendo?
What are you doing?
hacer → haciendo (regular gerund). estar conjugated for tú = estás.
Los niños están durmiendo.
The children are sleeping.
dormir → durmiendo (irregular: o→u in gerund). estar for ellos = están.
