Exam Skills:WritingSpeaking

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Můj bratr pracuje v Praze.

My brother works in Prague.

Její auto je červené.

Her car is red.

Naše škola je velká.

Our school is big.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Přivlastňovací zájmena vyjadřují, komu něco patří. Zájmena můj, tvůj, náš, váš se mění podle rodu podstatného jména, ke kterému patří. Zájmena jeho, její, jejich se nemění.

OsobaMFN
můjmoje/mámoje/mé
tytvůjtvoje/tvátvoje/tvé
onjeho (neměnné)
onajejí (neměnné)
mynášnašenaše
vyvášvaševaše
onijejich (neměnné)

Pozor: Přivlastňovací zájmena se shodují s rodem vlastněné věci, ne vlastníka: jeho kniha (his book, F), jeho auto (his car, N).

Learners confuse gender agreement — the pronoun matches the owned item's gender, not the owner's. Also mixing můj/moje forms. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English his/her already indicates owner's gender but doesn't change for the owned item. Czech můj/moje/má changing by the noun's gender is a new pattern.

Common Error Patterns

Wrong gender form of possessive pronoun (e.g., *můj škola instead of moje škola)

Match the possessive to the owned noun's gender: můj (M), moje/má (F), moje/mé (N)

Tried to decline an invariable possessive (e.g., *jehá instead of jeho)

Remember: jeho, její, jejich NEVER change form. Only můj/tvůj/náš/váš change for gender.

Můj bratr pracuje v Praze.

My brother works in Prague.

Bratr is masculine → possessive takes masculine form můj (not moje).

Její auto je červené.

Her car is red.

Její (her) is invariable — it doesn't change regardless of the noun's gender. Auto is neuter.

Naše škola je velká.

Our school is big.

Škola is feminine → naše (not náš). Náš would be used with masculine nouns: náš dům.
