Elle est arrivée à l'heure et ils sont partis en retard.

She arrived on time and they left late.

Nous sommes nés en France.

We were born in France.

  • Il est allé. / Elle est allée.
  • Ils sont allés. / Elles sont allées.
Forgetting être (using avoir); forgetting to agree the participle with the subject. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English uses 'have' for all verbs. The être/avoir split is unique to French.

Failed to agree past participle with subject

With être: participle agrees with subject: +e (fem), +s (pl), +es (fem pl).

Je suis allé au marché.

I went to the market. (male speaker)

Être + allé. Masculine singular: no extra letters.

Elle est arrivée à l'heure et ils sont partis en retard.

She arrived on time and they left late.

Arrivée: feminine singular (+e). Partis: masculine plural (+s). Agreement with subject.

Nous sommes nés en France.

We were born in France.

Naître (to be born) uses être. Nés: masculine plural agreement.
