Definite and indefinite articles decline for gender, number, and case
Can use definite and indefinite articles correctly
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Ο Γιάννης διαβάζει ένα βιβλίο.
Yannis is reading a book.
Η Μαρία πίνει τον καφέ της.
Maria is drinking her coffee.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Articles
Definite (the): ο/η/το (sg.), οι/οι/τα (pl.). Indefinite (a): ένας/μία/ένα (sg. only). Both decline for case.
English 'the/a' don't change. Greek articles change for gender, number, AND case — memorize the full table.
Ο Γιάννης διαβάζει ένα βιβλίο.
Yannis is reading a book.
ο + name (Greek uses articles with names!), ένα + neuter noun
Η Μαρία πίνει τον καφέ της.
Maria is drinking her coffee.
τον = accusative masc. article, της = her (genitive of η)
