Genitive Case

Expresses possession. The possessor comes AFTER the thing possessed: το σπίτι του Γιάννη = Yannis's house.

English uses 's or 'of'. Greek uses endings, and the possessor follows: 'John's house' = το σπίτι του Γιάννη (the house of-John).

Το σπίτι του Γιάννη είναι μεγάλο.

Yannis's house is big.

του Γιάννη = genitive of Γιάννης. Possessor follows the noun.

Η πόρτα του σπιτιού.

The door of the house.

σπίτι (neut.) → σπιτιού (genitive). Note stress shift.
