כינויי רמז
Hebrew demonstrative pronouns: זה, זאת, אלה and the post-nominal demonstrative
Can use demonstrative pronouns and the post-nominal demonstrative construction correctly
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
זה כלב.
This is a dog.
הספר הזה מעניין.
This book is interesting.
אלה הילדים שלי.
These are my children.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
כינויי הרמז מצביעים על דבר קרוב.
| כינוי רמז | שימוש | דוגמה |
|---|---|---|
| זֶה | זכר יחיד — this (m.) | זה ספר (this is a book) |
| זֹאת / זוֹ | נקבה יחיד — this (f.) | זאת מכונית (this is a car) |
| אֵלֶּה | רבים (m./f.) — these | אלה ספרים (these are books) |
כינוי רמז אחרי שם עצם עם ה-:
כדי לומר this book (לא this is a book), מוסיפים ה- לשם העצם וגם לכינוי הרמז:
- הַסֵּפֶר הַזֶּה (this book — m.)
- הַמְּכוֹנִית הַזֹּאת (this car — f.)
- הַסְּפָרִים הָאֵלֶּה (these books)
שגיאה נפוצה: הספר זה ✗ → הספר הזה ✓ — גם שם העצם וגם כינוי הרמז מקבלים ה-.
Omitting ה- from the demonstrative in post-nominal position: הספר זה instead of הספר הזה. Using זה for all genders (applying to feminine nouns: זאת, not זה, for מכונית). Forgetting that in predicative position (this IS a book) no article is needed: זה ספר, not הספר הזה ספר.
English speakers: no gender distinction in 'this' — must learn זה/זאת split. Ru/Cs speakers: этот/эта/это or ten/ta/to are analogous but article doubling is unfamiliar.
Common Error Patterns
Used attributive demonstrative without ה- on noun or demonstrative (e.g., הספר זה instead of הספר הזה)
Rule: in attributive position BOTH the noun and the demonstrative must carry ה-: הספר הזה, המכונית הזאת
Used זה with a feminine noun (e.g., זה מכונית instead of זאת מכונית)
Match the demonstrative to the noun's gender: זה for masculine, זאת/זו for feminine
זה כלב.
This is a dog.
Predicative: זה = this/it is (m.). No article on כלב because it is indefinite.
הספר הזה מעניין.
This book is interesting.
Attributive: both הספר (the book) and הזה (this) carry ה-. Two articles, one on each word.
אלה הילדים שלי.
These are my children.
אלה (these) is the plural demonstrative, used for both masculine and feminine plurals.
