Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
שלוש מילות יחס בסיסיות בעברית מחוברות ישירות לשם העצם:
| מילת יחס | משמעות | דוגמה |
|---|---|---|
| ב- | in / at / with | בבית (at home), בתל אביב |
| ל- | to / for | לבית (to home), לדן (to/for Dan) |
| מ- | from | מהבית (from the house) |
חיבור עם ה (הידיעה):
| מילת יחס + ה | תוצאה | דוגמה |
|---|---|---|
| ב + ה | ב- (ba-) | ב+הבית → בבית |
| ל + ה | ל- (la-) | ל+הבית → לבית |
| מ + ה | מה- (me-ha-) | מ+הבית → מהבית |
שים לב: ב- ו-ל- בולעות את ה, אבל מ- נשארת כ-מה-.
Writing ב + הבית as two words (ב הבית) instead of fused בבית. Using מ- without ha- fusion (writing *מבית instead of מהבית when definite). Confusing ל- (direction/beneficiary) and ב- (location).
All L1s: these prepositions are prefixed — no space. English speakers: no preposition fusion concept in English.
Common Error Patterns
Failed to fuse prefix preposition with following noun or wrote as separate word
Prefix prepositions ב-, ל-, מ- are always attached directly to the noun — no space
Incorrectly fused מ+ה as *מ instead of מה-
Unlike ב- and ל-, מ- does not absorb ה: מ + הבית = מהבית (me-habáyit), not *מבית
אני גר בתל אביב.
I live in Tel Aviv.
ב- prefix attached to תל אביב (no ה needed for proper nouns). Means 'in/at'.
הם נסעו לים.
They went to the sea.
ל- + הים → לים: ל- absorbs ה. Means 'to'. Compare: בים = in the sea (location) vs. לים = to the sea (direction).
הוא בא מהעיר.
He comes from the city.
מ- + העיר → מהעיר: מ- does NOT absorb ה — instead becomes מה-. Note: מ+ה = מה (me-ha-).
