Location suffixes: -ban/-ben, -ba/-be
-ban/-ben for static location; -ba/-be for direction into
Can express static location with -ban/-ben and direction with -ba/-be
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
A könyv az iskolában van.
The book is in the school.
Megyek az iskolába.
I'm going to school (into school).
Budapesten dolgozom, de Győrbe utazom.
I work in Budapest but I travel to Győr.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
-ban/-ben = in (static, where?). -ba/-be = into (motion, where to?). Cities like Budapest use -en/-on instead.
Confusing -ban (staying) and -ba (going into). Budapest takes -en, not -ban.
Common Error Patterns
Using -ban (static) when motion is intended or vice versa
Ask yourself: where are you (staying)? → -ban/-ben. Where are you going (into)? → -ba/-be.
Using -ban/-ben with Budapest instead of -en
Budapest, Pécs, Győr and most city names use -en/-on/-án, NOT -ban/-ben.
A könyv az iskolában van.
The book is in the school.
iskola + -ban = iskolában. Static location (where?). Back vowel word → -ban.
Megyek az iskolába.
I'm going to school (into school).
iskola + -ba = iskolába. Motion toward/into (where to?). -ba vs -ban: moving vs staying.
Budapesten dolgozom, de Győrbe utazom.
I work in Budapest but I travel to Győr.
Budapest takes -en (exception!), Győr takes -be (front vowel, direction).
