Common Error Patterns

Omitting the obligatory comma before 'mert' or 'ha' conjunctions in written Hungarian.

Confusing causal 'mert' (because) with conditional 'ha' (if), leading to wrong logical relationship.

Otthon maradok, mert beteg vagyok.

I stay home because I'm sick.

'Mert' = because. The verb in the subordinate clause stays in normal position (not moved to end).

Ha esik az eső, otthon maradok.

If it rains, I stay home.

'Ha' = if/when. When the 'ha' clause comes first, the main clause follows after a comma.

Nem megyek ki, mert hideg van.

I'm not going out because it's cold.

Negative main clause + 'mert' subordinate. Both parts express complete ideas around the conjunction.
