Basic Hungarian word order: topic-focus-verb and emphasis through position
Can understand how word order changes emphasis and use basic focus structure in simple sentences
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
ANNA szereti a kávét.
It's ANNA who likes coffee (not someone else).
A piacon ZÖLDSÉGET veszek.
At the market I'm buying VEGETABLES (not something else).
Anna nem megy moziba.
Anna is NOT going to the cinema.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Hungarian word order is topic–focus–verb. The word BEFORE the verb is in focus and gets main stress. Negation: nem immediately before verb. Neutral sentences (no special emphasis): verb second or later, subject flexible.
Common Error Patterns
Does not exploit pre-verb position for emphasis (sounds flat or wrong)
The word DIRECTLY before the verb receives main stress. Move the word you want to emphasise to that position.
Places nem somewhere other than directly before the verb
In Hungarian negation: nem must be immediately before the finite verb. Anna nem megy — never *nem Anna megy or *Anna megy nem.
ANNA szereti a kávét.
It's ANNA who likes coffee (not someone else).
Anna in pre-verb focus position → contrastive emphasis on the subject.
A piacon ZÖLDSÉGET veszek.
At the market I'm buying VEGETABLES (not something else).
Zöldséget immediately before veszek = focus on the object (what is being bought).
Anna nem megy moziba.
Anna is NOT going to the cinema.
Nem always directly before the verb in negation — nem takes the focus position.
