Can negate statements using じゃありません and じゃない
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
これは本じゃありません。
This is not a book.
私は先生じゃありません。学生です。
I'm not a teacher. I'm a student.
あれは猫じゃない。犬だ。
That's not a cat. It's a dog.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
To negate です, use じゃありません (polite) or じゃない (casual).

| Casual | 〜だ | 〜じゃない |
じゃ is a contraction of では. In writing and formal speech, ではありません is preferred.
Pattern: A は B じゃありません。= A is not B.
