名詞文 — Noun Sentences
The most fundamental sentence pattern in Japanese: [Topic] は [Noun] です。

| Affirmative | A は B です | これはペンです。(This is a pen.) |
| Negative | A は B じゃありません | これはペンじゃありません。(This is not a pen.) |
| Question | A は B ですか | これはペンですか。(Is this a pen?) |
| Also | A も B です | これもペンです。(This is also a pen.) |
Answers to yes/no questions:
- はい、ペンです。 = Yes, it's a pen.
- いいえ、ペンじゃありません。鉛筆です。 = No, it's not a pen. It's a pencil.
の particle for noun modification: 日本語の本 = a Japanese (language) book; 田中さんの本 = Tanaka's book.
Adding は after question words — use が instead (何がですか); Forgetting か for questions.
🇬🇧 English speakers: Try to add articles — 'a pen' is just ペン, no article needed.
田中さんは日本人です。
Mr. Tanaka is Japanese.
田中さん(Mr. Tanaka) + は(topic) + 日本人(にほんじん, Japanese person) + です
あなたも学生ですか。
Are you also a student?
あなた(you) + も(also, replaces は) + 学生(がくせい, student) + ですか(is? — question)
