Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Los domingos jugamos al fútbol, pero hoy yo no juego.

On Sundays we play football, but today I'm not playing.

El camarero nos sirvió el gazpacho antes de que pidiéramos el segundo.

The waiter served us the gazpacho before we ordered the main course.

Mi abuela durmió toda la sobremesa en el sillón.

My grandmother slept through the whole after-lunch chat in the armchair.

Volvimos del Rastro sin comprar nada, aunque todo costaba poco.

We came back from El Rastro without buying anything, although everything was cheap.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

En A1 aprendiste que tengo y vengo son irregulares. En A2 descubres que no son excepciones sueltas: hay un sistema. Cuando la sílaba de la raíz lleva el acento, la vocal se rompe en diptongo. Cuando el acento cae en la terminación, la raíz se queda tranquila. Por eso decimos yo puedo pero nosotros podemos.

CambioInfinitivoyo, tú, él, ellosnosotros, vosotros
e → iequerer, pensar, empezar, cerrarquiero, piensas, empiezaqueremos, pensáis
o → uepoder, volver, dormir, costarpuedo, vuelves, cuestapodemos, volvéis
u → uejugar (único)juego, juegas, juegajugamos, jugáis
e → ipedir, servir, seguir, repetirpido, sirves, siguepedimos, servís

Practice Exercises
The mistake is almost never the present tense — it is forgetting that -ir verbs keep the change outside the present (*pedió, *dormiendo instead of pidió, durmiendo), and inventing it in -ar/-er verbs (*puedimos, *piensó). 🇬🇧 English speakers: Tend to learn each form as a separate vocabulary item, so they never notice the stress rule and produce *podo / *volvo. Say the word out loud: if the stress lands on the stem, the diphthong appears.

Los domingos jugamos al fútbol, pero hoy yo no juego.

On Sundays we play football, but today I'm not playing.

Jugar is the only u>ue verb in Spanish. Jugamos (stress on -a-) keeps the u; juego (stress on the stem) takes the diphthong.

El camarero nos sirvió el gazpacho antes de que pidiéramos el segundo.

The waiter served us the gazpacho before we ordered the main course.

Servir and pedir are -ir verbs: the e>i change survives into the preterite third person (sirvió, pidieron) and into the subjunctive.

Mi abuela durmió toda la sobremesa en el sillón.

My grandmother slept through the whole after-lunch chat in the armchair.

Dormir: o>ue in the present (duerme) but o>u in the gerund and third-person preterite (durmiendo, durmió). Never *dormió.

Volvimos del Rastro sin comprar nada, aunque todo costaba poco.

We came back from El Rastro without buying anything, although everything was cheap.

Volver is an -er verb, so the diphthong disappears completely outside the present: volvimos, volvió, volviendo.
