Usos de ESTAR:

  • Localização: O livro está na mesa.
  • Estado temporário: Estou cansado.
  • Humor: Ela está triste.
  • Clima: Está frio hoje.
  • Progressivo: Estou estudando (BP) / Estou a estudar (EP).
Using estar for permanent traits (Ela está alta* for 'she is tall' → Ela é alta). Forgetting contractions: em + o = no, em + a = na. 🇬🇧 English speakers: All 'to be' contexts use one verb in English. 'I am tired' = Estou (NOT sou) cansado.

Eu estou cansado.

I am tired.

Estar for temporary state — tiredness passes. Compare: Eu sou alto (permanent — height).

O gato está na mesa.

The cat is on the table.

Estar for location. Em + a = na (contraction). The cat could move — location is temporary.

Está frio hoje.

It's cold today.

Estar for weather — no subject needed (está = it is). Weather is always temporary.
