Introductions

- คุณมาจากที่ไหน? = Where are you from?
- ผมเป็นคนกรุงเทพ = I'm from Bangkok (lit: Bangkok person)
Thai Nicknames
Every Thai has a ชื่อเล่น (nickname) used in daily life. Formal names are for documents only!
Using เป็น for names (ผมเป็นสมชาย instead of ผมชื่อสมชาย). Confusing ชื่อ with มาจาก.
Common Error Patterns
Using เป็น instead of ชื่อ for names
Names use ชื่อ: ผมชื่อสมชาย. เป็น is for professions/nationalities.
ผมชื่อสมชาย ยินดีที่ได้รู้จักครับ
My name is Somchai. Nice to meet you.
ชื่อ = 'to be named'. No extra verb needed: ผม + ชื่อ + สมชาย.
ฉันมาจากเชียงใหม่ค่ะ
I'm from Chiang Mai.
มาจาก = come from. For places/cities/countries.
คุณเป็นคนที่ไหนครับ?
Where are you from? (lit: person of where?)
เป็นคน + place = 'from [place]'. An alternative to มาจาก.
