Question Words
Questions: ไหม (yes/no), อะไร (what), ใคร (who), ที่ไหน (where), เท่าไหร่ (how much)
I can form Thai questions.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
นี่อะไรครับ?
What is this?
คุณมาจากที่ไหนคะ?
Where are you from?
ส้มตำเท่าไหร่ครับ?
How much is the papaya salad?
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Thai Questions
Yes/No: Add ไหม (mǎi) at end: อร่อยไหม? (Is it delicious?)
Wh-questions: Question word goes at the END (unlike English!):

Word order: นี่อะไร? (This what? = What is this?) NOT อะไรนี่!
Putting question words at the start (English habit). Forgetting ไหม for yes/no questions. Confusing เท่าไหร่ (how much) with กี่ (how many).
Common Error Patterns
Putting question word at sentence start
Thai question words go at the END: นี่อะไร (this what), not อะไรนี่.
Forgetting ไหม for yes/no questions
Add ไหม at end to make yes/no: อร่อย → อร่อยไหม?
นี่อะไรครับ?
What is this?
Question word at END: นี่ (this) + อะไร (what). NOT อะไรนี่!
คุณมาจากที่ไหนคะ?
Where are you from?
ที่ไหน at END: คุณมาจาก (you come from) + ที่ไหน (where).
ส้มตำเท่าไหร่ครับ?
How much is the papaya salad?
เท่าไหร่ = how much (price). Goes at end of sentence.
