SVO Word Order
Basic Thai sentence structure: Subject-Verb-Object, adjectives after nouns
I can form basic Thai sentences.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
ผมกินข้าวผัดครับ
I eat fried rice.
อาหารไทยอร่อยมาก
Thai food is very delicious.
วันนี้ผมไปตลาดน้ำครับ
Today I go to the floating market.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Thai SVO Word Order
Good news: Thai uses SVO (Subject-Verb-Object), same as English!
BUT: Adjectives come AFTER nouns (like French): อาหารอร่อย = food delicious = delicious food
Time goes at the start or end: วันนี้ผมไปตลาด = Today I go to market
No articles: No 'a', 'an', 'the'. บ้าน = house / a house / the house
Putting adjectives before nouns (English habit). Adding 'a/the' translations. Wrong time-word placement.
Common Error Patterns
Putting adjective before noun
Thai: noun + adjective. อาหารอร่อย (food delicious), not อร่อยอาหาร.
ผมกินข้าวผัดครับ
I eat fried rice.
SVO: ผม (I) + กิน (eat) + ข้าวผัด (fried rice). Same order as English!
อาหารไทยอร่อยมาก
Thai food is very delicious.
Adjective AFTER noun: อาหารไทย (food Thai) + อร่อย (delicious) + มาก (very).
วันนี้ผมไปตลาดน้ำครับ
Today I go to the floating market.
Time word first: วันนี้ (today) + ผม (I) + ไป (go) + ตลาดน้ำ (floating market).
