Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Çay içmek ister misiniz?

Would you like to drink tea?

Dağ çok yüksek.

The mountain is very high.

Kız ve kırmızı — ikisinde de 'ı' var.

Girl and red — both have 'ı' in them.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Türk alfabesi 29 harften oluşur. Latince alfabeye dayanır, ancak İngilizce'de olmayan bazı özel harfler vardır: ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü. Ayrıca İngilizce'deki q, w, x harfleri Türkçe'de yoktur.

HarfOkunuşuÖrnek
Ç ç'ch' gibi (İng. 'church')çay (çay)
Ğ ğyumuşak g — önceki ünlüyü uzatırdağ (da:)
I ıgırtlaktan gelen kapalı ünlüısı, kız
İ inormal 'i' sesi, bir
Ö öAlmanca 'ö' gibigöz, ön
Ş ş'sh' gibi (İng. 'ship')şeker
Ü üAlmanca 'ü' gibigül, üç

Önemli kural: Türkçe fonetik bir dildir — her harf her zaman aynı sesi verir. Yazıldığı gibi okunur!

İpucu: I/ı (noktasız) ve İ/i (noktalı) iki farklı harftir. Büyük harf: I → ı, İ → i.

Learners confuse I/ı (undotted, back vowel) with İ/i (dotted, front vowel). The ğ is never pronounced as a hard 'g' — it lengthens the preceding vowel. 🇬🇧 English speakers: Struggle with ı (no English equivalent), ö, ü, and the soft ğ. Tend to pronounce ğ as a hard 'g'.

Common Error Patterns

Confused ı (undotted) with i (dotted)

Remember: ı is a back vowel (like the 'u' in English 'but'), i is a front vowel (like 'ee' in 'see')

Pronounced ğ as a hard g sound

Ğ is silent — it lengthens the preceding vowel. dağ = 'daa', not 'dag'

Çay içmek ister misiniz?

Would you like to drink tea?

Ç sounds like 'ch' in 'church'. Çay (tea) is one of the most common Turkish words.

Dağ çok yüksek.

The mountain is very high.

Ğ (soft g) lengthens the preceding vowel: dağ is pronounced 'daa', not 'dag'.

Kız ve kırmızı — ikisinde de 'ı' var.

Girl and red — both have 'ı' in them.

Undotted ı is a unique Turkish sound — a back unrounded vowel. It doesn't exist in English, German, or most European languages.
