Indefinite pronouns (хтось «someone», будь-хто «anyone», хто-небудь) and negative ні-words (pronouns ніхто, ніщо and adverbs ніколи, ніде) with the two rules English speakers miss: obligatory double negation (Ніхто НЕ знає) and preposition splitting (ні з ким, not «з ніким»).
I can use indefinite and negative pronouns with double negation to say that someone, anyone or no one does something.
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Хтось залишив парасольку в кав'ярні на Подолі.
Someone left an umbrella in a café in Podil.
Будь-хто може навчитися розписувати писанки — приходьте на майстер-клас.
Anyone can learn to decorate pysanky - come to the workshop.
Після переїзду до Ужгорода я ще ні з ким не познайомився.
Since moving to Uzhhorod I haven't met anyone yet.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
Неозначені займенники: хтось, щось (хтось конкретний, але невідомий), хто-небудь (хтось, байдуже хто), будь-хто, будь-що (кожен, хто завгодно). Заперечні ні-слова: займенники ніхто, ніщо та прислівники ніколи, ніде — і при них дієслово ОБОВ'ЯЗКОВО з не: Ніхто не знає. З прийменником заперечний займенник розпадається: ні з ким, ні в кого, ні про що.

Practice ExercisesOmitting the obligatory не with ні-pronouns (English/German pattern: «Ніхто знає»), putting the preposition before the whole negative pronoun («з ніким» instead of ні з ким), or wrong spelling of the indefinite series (e.g. «будь хто» without the hyphen, or «хто-сь» instead of хтось).
Every ні-pronoun requires не on the verb: Ніхто НЕ знає, я нічого НЕ бачив. With a preposition, the pronoun splits: ні з ким, ні в кого, ні про що. Spelling: хтось/щось one word, будь-хто and хто-небудь with a hyphen.
Хтось залишив парасольку в кав'ярні на Подолі.
Someone left an umbrella in a café in Podil.
хтось = a specific but unknown person; -сь is written together with the pronoun, no hyphen.
Будь-хто може навчитися розписувати писанки — приходьте на майстер-клас.
Anyone can learn to decorate pysanky - come to the workshop.
будь-хто = absolutely anyone (free choice); always spelled with a hyphen.
Після переїзду до Ужгорода я ще ні з ким не познайомився.
Since moving to Uzhhorod I haven't met anyone yet.
ні з ким: the preposition з sits inside the pronoun, and the verb still needs не - double negation.
