Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Я читаю цікаву книгу.

I am reading an interesting book.

Ми зустріли мого брата.

We met my brother.

Він купив новий комп'ютер.

He bought a new computer.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Знахідний відмінок (питання кого? що?) — це прямий додаток дії: Я читаю кни́гу.

Головне правило — категорія істот (animacy) для чоловічого роду:

ТипЗнахідний = Приклад
Чол. істота (хто?)= родовийЯ бачу бра́та. (брат → брата)
Чол. неістота (що?)= називнийЯ бачу стіл. (стіл = стіл)
Жіночий-у / -юкнига → кни́гу; земля → зе́млю
Середній= називнийвікно = вікно

У множині правило істот діє для всіх родів: Я бачу студе́нтів (= родовий) проти Я бачу столи́ (= називний).

🇬🇧 English speakers: the direct object takes a special ending, and crucially masculine ANIMATE objects look like the genitive (бачу брата), while inanimate ones look like the dictionary form (бачу стіл).

Я читаю цікаву книгу.

I am reading an interesting book.

Feminine object → -у: книгу (and adj. цікаву).

Ми зустріли мого брата.

We met my brother.

Masc. animate → accusative = genitive: брата.

Він купив новий комп'ютер.

He bought a new computer.

Masc. inanimate → accusative = nominative: комп'ютер.
