"Của" — Possession
Vietnamese expresses possession with của (of/belonging to), placed between the possessed item and the possessor: sách của tôi = book of me = my book.
| Vietnamese | Literal | English |
|---|---|---|
| sách của tôi | book of me | my book |
| nhà của anh ấy | house of he | his house |
| Của ai? | Of who? | Whose? |
Optional của: With pronouns, của is often dropped in casual speech: bạn tôi = my friend (no của needed!). But with longer phrases, keep it for clarity.
của as 'belongings': của also means 'thing/stuff': Cái này là của tôi = This thing is mine.
Common Error Patterns
Put possessor before noun instead of using của after
Vietnamese: NOUN + của + OWNER. sách của tôi = my book. NOT *tôi sách or *tôi của sách.
Đây là xe của tôi.
This is my car.
xe của tôi = car of me = my car. của links the possessed (xe) to the possessor (tôi).
Bạn tôi rất vui.
My friend is very happy.
của is OPTIONAL with pronouns in casual speech: bạn tôi = bạn của tôi = my friend. Both are correct!
Cái này của ai?
Whose is this?
của ai = of whom = whose? Used to ask about ownership: Cái này của ai? = This thing belongs to whom?
