Số đếm — Cardinal Numbers
Vietnamese numbers are remarkably logical — once you know 0-10, you can build any number!
| Number | Vietnamese | Number | Vietnamese |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | không | 10 | mười |
| 1 | một | 11 | mười một |
| 2 | hai | 12 | mười hai |
| 3 | ba | 20 | hai mươi |
| 4 | bốn | 21 | hai mươi mốt |
| 5 | năm | 25 | hai mươi lăm |
| 6 | sáu | 30 | ba mươi |
| 7 | bảy | 44 | bốn mươi bốn (tư) |
| 8 | tám | 50 | năm mươi |
| 9 | chín | 100 | một trăm |
mười vs mươi: mười = 10 (standalone or in 11-19: mười ba = 13). mươi = -ty (in 20-90: hai mươi = 20). Think: mười = 'ten', mươi = '-ty'.
Special forms in compounds:
- 1: một (standalone) → mốt (in 21, 31, etc.: hai mươi mốt = 21)
- 4: bốn (standalone) → tư (optional in compounds: bốn mươi tư = 44)
- 5: năm (standalone) → lăm (in compounds: mười lăm = 15, hai mươi lăm = 25)
Common Error Patterns
Confused mười (10-19) and mươi (20-90)
mười = ten (for 10-19: mười ba = 13). mươi = -ty (for 20+: hai mươi = 20, ba mươi = 30).
Used standalone form in compound (một instead of mốt, năm instead of lăm)
In compounds: 1 = mốt (hai mươi mốt = 21), 5 = lăm (mười lăm = 15), 4 = tư (optional: bốn mươi tư = 44).
Tôi hai mươi lăm tuổi.
I am 25 years old.
Note lăm (not năm) for 5 in compounds! hai mươi lăm = 25. Also, tuổi = age/years old.
Mười lăm cộng mười lăm bằng ba mươi.
15 plus 15 equals 30.
mười lăm (15) uses mười (10-19 range). ba mươi (30) uses mươi (20-90 range). This mười/mươi switch is the key rule!
Phòng số bốn mươi mốt.
Room number 41.
mốt (not một) for 1 in compounds above 20: bốn mươi mốt = 41. Remember: một = standalone 1, mốt = compound 1.
