Spisovná a obecná čeština – systémové srovnání

The full parallel system: endings, prothetic v-, é→ý/í shifts across paradigms, and code-switching norms

Objectif d'apprentissage

I can map standard forms to their colloquial counterparts and switch register by situation.

Regardez ces exemples. Pouvez-vous repérer le schéma grammatical ?

Bylo to dobrý, ale příště bysme měli přijít dřív.

It was good, but next time we should come earlier.

S těma novejma sousedama jsme se hned skámošili.

We hit it off with the new neighbours right away.

Faites attention aux parties en surbrillance. Qu'ont-elles en commun ?

Sooner or later every learner notices that Czechs do not talk like the textbook. The newsreader on ČT says mladý muž; the same newsreader in the pub says mladej chlap. This is not sloppiness. Spisovná čeština (standard Czech, codified in the Pravidla českého pravopisu and described in the Internetová jazyková příručka) and obecná čeština (common Czech, the everyday spoken variety of Bohemia) are two coherent systems, and adults move between them all day.

The system, not random errors

FeatureSpisovněObecně
ý → ejmladý, být, mýtmladej, bejt, mejt
é → ý/ímladé víno, mléko, polévkamladý víno, mlíko, polívka
prothetic v-okno, onvokno, von
instrumental plural -mas mladými lidmis mladejma lidma
3rd pluraldělají, sázejídělaj, sázej
býtjsem, jsi, jsousem, seš, sou
conditionalbychombysme
l-form after a consonantřekl, mohlřek, moh

Because the changes are regular, you can convert in your head: once you know that é often becomes ý, Dej mi to malý pivo is no mystery. A sentence such as S těma novejma sousedama jsme se hned skámošili is fully consistent obecná.

Where it is spoken

Obecná čeština is the everyday speech of Prague and Bohemia and has spread into western Moravia. Most of Moravia and Silesia speak differently: in Brno or Olomouc you will hear mladý rather than mladej, plus regional forms of their own, and Brno even has its own slang, hantec (šalina for the tram). So mladej marks a Bohemian voice as much as a casual one.

Between the two: hovorová čeština

There is also a middle zone, sometimes called hovorová čeština: forms that are relaxed but still standard. Píšu, kupuju, maluju are fully standard today alongside the bookish píši, kupuji, maluji. Bysme, on the other hand, is heard everywhere, even on television, but the norm keeps bychom for writing.

When to switch

  • Spisovně: anything written that is not a chat message, exams, the office, a speech, talking to officials, the news.
  • Obecně: friends, family, the pub, the football terraces, Czech films (Svěrák's Vratné lahve or Hřebejk's Pelíšky are full of it).
  • Mixed: most real conversations. A speaker can say jsem and mladej in one sentence, and nobody blinks.

As a foreigner you need to understand obecná fully and produce neutral spoken Czech. Sprinkling in a few common forms (dobrej, bysme) sounds natural; a full obecná paradigm with a foreign accent can sound like a costume.

Typical slips

  • Treating obecná as "wrong Czech" and correcting your Czech friends.
  • Writing obecná forms in a formal e-mail or a cover letter.
  • Mixing systems in one word: *mladejmi lidmi; either s mladými lidmi or s mladejma lidma.

  • Mixing registers in formal writing
  • Using obecná with officials — read the situation

Bylo to dobrý, ale příště bysme měli přijít dřív.

It was good, but next time we should come earlier.

dobrý (= dobré) + bysme (= bychom): everyday spoken forms.

S těma novejma sousedama jsme se hned skámošili.

We hit it off with the new neighbours right away.
