English "if" does two jobs, and Czech splits them. A condition that can really happen takes jestli, pokud or když. A condition you only imagine takes kdyby, which conjugates like aby: kdybych, kdybys, kdyby, kdybychom, kdybyste, kdyby.
| Type | Czech | English |
|---|---|---|
| Real, future | Jestli zítra bude pršet, zůstaneme doma. | If it rains tomorrow, we'll stay home. |
| Imagined, now | Kdybych měl čas, jel bych s vámi. | If I had time, I'd go with you. |
| Imagined, past | Kdybych byl věděl, byl bych přišel. | If I had known, I would have come. |
| Wish | Kdyby tak už byl pátek! | If only it were Friday! |
As with every conditional, reflexive pronouns fuse in the 2nd person singular: Kdyby ses nudil, zavolej.
The full past form kdybych byl věděl is literary. In conversation Czechs normally say Kdybych to věděl, přišel bych and let the context show that it is about yesterday. So that sentence can mean "If I knew" or "If I had known". Listen for time words: Kdybys mi to řekl včera...
Because it sounds hypothetical, kdyby softens offers and requests: Kdybyste něco potřebovali, jsem vedle. - If you need anything, I'm next door. A very common spoken formula drops the verb entirely: Kdyby něco, zavolej. - If anything comes up, call me. Note also that jestli has a second meaning, "whether": Nevím, jestli přijde. Jestliže, the more formal variant, means only "if".
