Oefenoefeningen
Learners confuse moct (general ability/permission) with umět (learned skill), and forget irregular conjugation patterns. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English 'can' covers both moct and umět, so learners use moct for skills (Umím plavat, not *Můžu plavat for 'I can swim' as learned ability).

Veelgemaakte foutpatronen

Used wrong modal verb for the intended meaning (e.g., moct instead of umět)

Review: moct=possibility/permission, umět=learned skill, muset=obligation, smět=formal permission, chtít=desire

Incorrect conjugation of a modal verb

Modal verbs have irregular conjugation. Review each verb's full paradigm, especially 1sg and 3pl forms.

Můžeš mi pomoci?

Can you help me?

Moct (can/may) + infinitive. Můžeš is the ty-form.

Musím jít k lékaři.

I must go to the doctor.

Muset (must) expresses obligation. Musím is já-form.

Umím mluvit česky a anglicky.

I can speak Czech and English.

Umět (know how) for learned skills, unlike moct (general possibility).
