Regular verb conjugation in present tense — the three conjugation classes

Albanian verbs change their ending for each person, where English has one ending, the "-s" of he/she/it. Verbs are listed by the "I" form, and that form shows you which pattern a verb follows. Grammars group the regular verbs into three conjugations.

This is the biggest group: lexoj (read), dëgjoj (listen), banoj (live), mësoj (learn, teach), shkruaj (write), blej (buy).

The singular has no ending at all. Many verbs of this type change their vowel in the second and third person: marr (I take) - merr (you take, he takes); dal (I go out) - del.

Ha (eat) works the same: hamë, hani, hanë.
The Albanian present covers both "I work" and "I'm working": Punoj në Tiranë (I work in Tirana) and Tani punoj (I'm working now). For an action in progress you can add po: Po pi kafe - I'm having a coffee (right now). And remember that the ending carries the person, so Banojmë në Vlorë is a full sentence: "We live in Vlorë".
Some very common verbs are irregular and best learned as they come: flas (I speak) - flet (you speak, he speaks) - flasim; shoh (I see) - sheh - shohim; bëj (I do).
