The subject pronouns map neatly onto English, with two differences: Romanian has a separate plural "you", and "they" comes in two genders.
| Person | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | eu - I | noi - we |
| 2nd | tu - you (one friend) | voi - you (several people) |
| 3rd masculine | el - he, it | ei - they (men, or a mixed group) |
| 3rd feminine | ea - she, it | ele - they (all women) |
Say eu, el, ea, ei, ele with a "y" in front: "yeu", "yel", "ya", "yei", "ye-le".
The verb ending already says who is acting, so Romanian drops the subject pronoun in neutral sentences: Vorbesc românește. - I speak Romanian. Locuim în Cluj. - We live in Cluj. Putting eu in every sentence, as English makes you do with "I", sounds insistent. Keep the pronoun for contrast or emphasis: Eu beau cafea, tu bei ceai. - I drink coffee, you drink tea.
A thing is el or ea according to the grammatical gender of the noun, the way a ship can be "she" in English: Unde e cartea? - E pe masă. or, stressing it, Ea e pe masă. - Where is the book? - It's on the table. Weather verbs take no subject at all: Plouă. - It's raining.
For "they", one man in the group is enough to make it ei: Ana, Maria and Andrei are ei; Ana and Maria alone are ele.
English "you" covers what Romanian splits by politeness. Use tu with friends, family, children and people your age in casual settings. Use dumneavoastră (polite "you") with strangers, older people, officials, a doctor or the waiter in a Bucharest restaurant. It takes the verb form of voi, even for one person: Dumneavoastră sunteți domnul Popescu? - Are you Mr Popescu? When in doubt, start with the polite form and let the Romanian side offer tu: Hai să ne tutuim! - Let's say tu to each other.
