방향 조사 (으)로 (Direction/Means Particle)

The particle (으)로 indicates direction, means, or method.

EndingUseExample
vowel/ㄹ + After vowel or ㄹ서울 (to Seoul), 지하철 (by subway)
consonant + 으로After consonant (not ㄹ)부산으로 (to Busan), 숟가락으로 (with a spoon)

Three main uses:

UseExampleTranslation
Direction왼쪽으로 가세요.Go to the left.
Means/Tool한국어 말해요.Speak in Korean.
Choice이것으로 주세요.Give me this one (choice).

Direction vs Location: Compare 에 vs (으)로: 학교 가요 (go to school — destination) vs 이쪽으로 가요 (go this way — direction/path). (으)로 emphasizes the route or direction, while 에 marks the endpoint.

Confusing (으)로 with 에 for direction. Forgetting the ㄹ exception (use 로 not 으로 after ㄹ). EN speakers: English uses prepositions (to, by, with) — Korean's single particle covering direction + means feels overloaded. May over-apply 에 instead. DE speakers: German has many prepositions with cases (nach, mit, zu). Mapping these to (으)로 is confusing since one Korean particle covers multiple German prepositions. RU speakers: Russian uses instrumental case for means (ложкой) — Korean (으)로 for means is an easier parallel. Direction use is less intuitive. CS speakers: Czech instrumental (nožem, autobusem) maps well to (으)로 for means. But Czech uses different cases for direction (do Prahy) vs means.
