장소 조사 에/에서 — Location Particles

Korean has two location particles with distinct meanings: for static location, destination, and time; 에서 for where an action takes place.

에 — Static location, destination, time:

UseExampleMeaning
Static location (with 있다/없다) 있어요.I'm at home.
Destination (with movement verbs)학교 가요.I go to school.
Time세 시 만나요.Let's meet at 3 o'clock.

에서 — Action location:

UseExampleMeaning
Where action happens학교에서 공부해요.I study at school.
Where action happens식당에서 먹어요.I eat at a restaurant.
From (origin)한국에서 왔어요.I came from Korea.

The critical distinction:

에 (static/destination)에서 (action location)
학교 있어요.
I am AT school. (existing there)
학교에서 공부해요.
I study AT school. (doing something there)
가요.
I go TO home. (destination)
에서 일해요.
I work AT home. (action happening)

Rule of thumb: 있다/없다 and movement verbs (가다, 오다) → . All other action verbs → 에서.

Learners mix up 에 and 에서, using 에서 with 있다 or 에 with action verbs. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English uses 'at' for both ('I'm at school' / 'I study at school'). Korean distinguishes them: 학교에 있어요 (existing at) vs 학교에서 공부해요 (acting at). Memorize: 있다 → 에, action verbs → 에서. 🇩🇪 German speakers: German in/an/bei are somewhat parallel but don't map cleanly. Think of 에 = 'in/an' (location/direction) and 에서 = 'bei/in' (action happening there).

Häufige Fehlermuster

Used 에 where 에서 is needed (or vice versa)

에 = static location (있다), destination (가다), time. 에서 = where an action happens. Rule: 있다/movement → 에, action verbs → 에서

Statischer Ort + 있다 → verwende 에. NICHT 에서, da 있다 keine Handlung ist.

Ich trinke Kaffee im Café.

Handlung an einem Ort → 에서. Eine Handlung (Trinken) geschieht im Café.

세 시에 만나요.

Treffen wir uns um drei Uhr.

Zeit → verwende 에. Auch für: 아침에 (morgens), 월요일에 (am Montag).
