Số thứ tự — Ordinal Numbers
Ordinal numbers in Vietnamese are formed by adding thứ before the cardinal number. The exception is 'first' which has a special form.

thứ nhất vs đầu tiên: Both mean 'first' but in different contexts. thứ nhất = firstly (in lists). đầu tiên = the first (chronologically). lần đầu tiên = the first time.
Same as days! Notice that ordinal numbers look exactly like days of the week (thứ hai = second / Monday). Context tells you which meaning is intended.
Häufige Fehlermuster
Used thứ một instead of thứ nhất for 'first'
The ordinal 'first' is thứ nhất (or đầu tiên), never *thứ một. All other ordinals are regular: thứ hai, thứ ba, etc.
Đây là lần đầu tiên tôi đến Việt Nam.
Das ist mein erstes Mal in Vietnam.
đầu tiên = erste(r/s) (chronologisch). lần đầu tiên = das erste Mal. NICHT *lần thứ một!

Das dritte Stockwerk ist links.
thứ ba = dritte(r/s) (Ordinal). Gleiche Wörter wie 'Dienstag' (thứ ba)! Der Kontext sagt: tầng thứ ba = 3. Stock, nicht 'Dienstag-Stock'.

thứ nhất = erstens (in Aufzählungen). thứ hai bedeutet hier 'zweitens', nicht Montag!
