Present Continuous
Present continuous: estar + gerúndio (BP) / estar a + infinitivo (EP)
Can form present continuous in both BP and EP styles
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Estou estudando português.
I am studying Portuguese.
O que você está fazendo?
What are you doing?
As crianças estão dormindo.
The children are sleeping.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
O presente contínuo (ação em progresso) tem duas formas regionais:

Formação do gerúndio (BP):

Formação EP: estar + a + infinitivo (sem modificar o verbo!).
Uso: Ação acontecendo AGORA: O que você está fazendo? (What are you doing?)
Estou estudando português.
I am studying Portuguese.
BP form: estar + gerúndio (estudando). EP form: Estou a estudar. Both = right now, not habitual!
O que você está fazendo?
What are you doing?
Estar + fazendo (gerund of fazer). This is THE most common continuous phrase. EP: O que está a fazer?
As crianças estão dormindo.
The children are sleeping.
Dormir → dormindo (-ir verbs: -indo). EP: As crianças estão a dormir.
