Learning Goal

Can choose correctly between ser and estar based on context

Exam Skills:VISC-A1

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Maria é inteligente.

Maria is intelligent.

Maria está feliz.

Maria is happy.

O café é quente. / O café está quente.

Coffee is hot (by nature). / The coffee is hot (right now).

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

A distinção ser vs estar é uma das maiores dificuldades para estudantes. A regra básica: ser = permanente/essencial, estar = temporário/circunstancial.

SER (permanente)ESTAR (temporário)
Ela é bonita. (She IS beautiful — nature)Ela está bonita. (She LOOKS beautiful — today)
Ele é magro. (He IS thin — build)Ele está magro. (He IS thin — lost weight)
A sopa é boa. (The soup IS good — recipe)A sopa está boa. (The soup IS good — this bowl)

Truques para lembrar:

  • DOCTOR (ser): Description, Occupation, Characteristic, Time, Origin, Relationship
  • PLACE (estar): Position, Location, Action (progressive), Condition, Emotion

Exceções importantes:

  • Ser morto = to be killed (event); Estar morto = to be dead (state)
  • Ser casado = to be married (status); Estar casado = to be married (current state, implies change)

Practice Exercises
The meaning changes with ser/estar — both are correct but mean different things. This is NOT a grammar error, it's a semantic choice. 🇬🇧 English speakers: 'She is beautiful' could be ser OR estar depending on meaning. Context is everything.

Maria é inteligente.

Maria is intelligent.

SER — intelligence is a permanent characteristic. This describes who Maria IS.

Maria está feliz.

Maria is happy.

ESTAR — happiness is a current emotion, it can change. Compare: Maria é feliz (she's a happy person by nature).

O café é quente. / O café está quente.

Coffee is hot (by nature). / The coffee is hot (right now).

SER = coffee is generally a hot drink. ESTAR = this specific cup is hot now. Both correct, different meanings!
