2. pád (genitiv) odpovídá na otázku koho? čeho? a je nejčastěji používaný pád v češtině.

RodVzor1. pád → 2. pádPříklad
M živ.pán-astudent → studenta
M neživ.hrad-u / -adům → domu
Fžena-yžena → ženy
Frůže-erůže → růže
Fkost-ikost → kosti
Nměsto-aměsto → města
Nmoře-emoře → moře

Hlavní použití: 1) Přivlastnění: auto otce (father's car). 2) Po z/ze: z Prahy (from Prague). 3) Množství + 2. pád mn. č.: pět studentů (five students). 4) Po záporných slovesech: Nemám času.

Genitiv mn. č.: M: -ů (studentů), F: -Ø/změna (žen, růží), N: -Ø (měst, moří).

Learners struggle with the -u vs -a distinction in masculine inanimate genitive and forget genitive plural forms. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English uses 'of' or apostrophe-s for possession — the genitive case with different endings per gender and pattern is a major challenge.

Common Error Patterns

Wrong genitive ending for the noun's declension pattern

M anim: -a. M inanim: -u or -a (learn which). F žena: -y, růže: -e, kost: -i. N město: -a, moře: -e.

Failed to use genitive where required (after z, quantities 5+, etc.)

Genitive is required: after z/ze (from), for possession, after numbers 5+, after bez (without), after negated verbs.

To je auto mého otce.

That is my father's car.

Genitive for possession: otec → otce (genitive). Word order: possessed + genitive owner.

Jsem z České republiky.

I am from the Czech Republic.

Z/ze + genitive for origin: Česká republika → České republiky.

Na kurzu je deset studentů.

There are ten students in the course.

Numbers 5+ require genitive plural: student → studentů. (2-4 use nominative plural.)
