3. pád (dativ) odpovídá na otázku komu? čemu? a vyjadřuje nepřímý předmět — toho, kdo něco dostává.

RodVzor1. pád → 3. pádPříklad
M živ.pán-ovi / -ustudent → studentovi
M živ.muž-ovi / -imuž → mužovi/muži
M neživ.hrad-udům → domu
Fžena-ě / -ežena → ženě
Frůže-irůže → růži
Fkost-ikost → kosti
Nměsto-uměsto → městu
Nmoře-imoře → moři

Měkčení: Koncovka způsobuje změnu souhlásky: -k → -ce (matka → matce), -h → -ze (kniha → knize), -ch → -še, -r → -ře (sestra → sestře).

Použití: Dám to kamarádovi. (I'll give it to a friend.) Pomáhám mamince. (I'm helping mum.)

Learners forget consonant softening before -ě and confuse -ovi vs -u endings for masculine animate nouns. 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has no dative case — 'to him/her' is expressed by word order or prepositions, so the concept of changing noun endings for indirect objects is new.

Common Error Patterns

Wrong dative ending for the noun's declension pattern

Check the noun's gender and vzor: M anim -ovi/-u, F žena -ě/-e, F růže/kost -i, N město -u, N moře -i

Missing consonant alternation before -ě in dative

Before -ě: k→c (matka→matce), h→z (kniha→knize), r→ř (sestra→sestře), ch→š

Dám ten dárek kamarádovi.

I'll give the gift to a friend.

Masculine animate pán-type: kamarád → kamarádovi (dative -ovi ending).

Zavolej sestře!

Call your sister!

Feminine žena-type: sestra → sestře (with consonant change r→ř before -ě).

Rozumím tomu městu.

I understand that city.

Neuter město-type: město → městu (dative -u). Rozumět takes dative.
