Hledám nový byt.

Znáš toho nového učitele?

Do you know that new teacher?

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

4. pád (akuzativ) odpovídá na otázky Koho? Co? a je nejčastějším pádem po slovesech (vidím, mám, znám, hledám...).

Klíčové pravidlo: Životné podstatné jméno mužského rodu mění tvar v akuzativu (Vidím studenta), neživotné zůstává stejné (Vidím dům).

Pozor na přídavná jména: U životných: nového studenta, mladého muže. U neživotných: nový dům, velký pokoj (= nominativ).

Learners forget the animate/inanimate distinction and either change inanimate nouns (wrong) or leave animate nouns unchanged (wrong). 🇬🇧 English speakers: English has no case endings on nouns, so the entire concept of changing a noun's form for accusative is new. The animate/inanimate split adds another layer of complexity.

Common Error Patterns

Left animate masculine noun in nominative form (e.g., *Vidím student instead of studenta)

Animate masculine nouns MUST change in accusative: pán-type adds -a, muž-type adds -e

Changed an inanimate masculine noun in accusative (e.g., *Vidím doma instead of dům)

Inanimate masculine nouns do NOT change in accusative — they keep their nominative form

Vidím studenta.

I see a student.

Student (animate masculine, pán-type) → studenta in accusative. Animate = add -a.

Hledám nový byt.

I'm looking for a new apartment.

Byt (inanimate masculine, hrad-type) stays unchanged in accusative. Inanimate = nominative.

Znáš toho nového učitele?

Do you know that new teacher?

Učitel (animate, muž-type) → učitele. Adjective and demonstrative also change: nový → nového, ten → toho.
