Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

Er zijn veel fietsen in Amsterdam.

There are many bikes in Amsterdam.

Er is een supermarkt naast het station.

There is a supermarket next to the station.

Ik denk eraan, maar ik praat er niet over.

I think about it, but I don't talk about it.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Er is een veelzijdig woordje in het Nederlands:

1. Existentieel er (there is/are):

Er is een probleem. (There is a problem.)
Er zijn veel mensen. (There are many people.)

2. Locatief er (there, at that place):

Ik ben er geweest. (I've been there.)

3. Voorzetsel-er (replaces het/dat + voorzetsel):

Ik denk eraan. (I think about it.) — er + aan
Ik kijk ernaar. (I look at it.) — er + naar

Let op: Bij existentieel er is het werkwoord enkelvoud of meervoud afhankelijk van wat volgt: Er is een hond vs. Er zijn drie honden.

Practice Exercises

Learners forget 'er' in existential constructions or confuse its three uses. 🇬🇧 English: 'There is/are' maps to 'Er is/zijn'. But Dutch 'er' has more uses (locative, prepositional).

Common Error Patterns

Forgetting 'er' in existential construction

Dutch requires 'er' in existential sentences: Er is/Er zijn..., not just *Is een probleem.

Er zijn veel fietsen in Amsterdam.

There are many bikes in Amsterdam.

Existential 'er' + 'zijn' (plural because 'fietsen' is plural).

Er is een supermarkt naast het station.

There is a supermarket next to the station.

Existential 'er' + 'is' (singular: één supermarkt).

Ik denk eraan, maar ik praat er niet over.

I think about it, but I don't talk about it.

Prepositional 'er': eraan (er + aan = about it), er...over (er + over = about it).
