Can construct main clauses with V2 word order
Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?
Morgen ga ik naar de supermarkt.
Tomorrow I go to the supermarket.
In de zomer zwemmen wij in de zee.
In summer we swim in the sea.
Ik eet brood en ik drink koffie.
I eat bread and I drink coffee.
Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?
In Dutch main clauses, the verb is ALWAYS in second position (V2 rule). If a non-subject starts the sentence, subject and verb swap (inversion).
Common Error Patterns
Verb not in second position
The verb MUST be in position 2 in main clauses. If something other than the subject is first, swap subject and verb.
Missing inversion after fronted element
When time/place/adverb is first, the subject moves AFTER the verb: Morgen werk ik, not *Morgen ik werk.
Morgen ga ik naar de supermarkt.
Tomorrow I go to the supermarket.
V2 rule: 'morgen' is in position 1, so verb 'ga' must be in position 2, and subject 'ik' moves after the verb.
In de zomer zwemmen wij in de zee.
In summer we swim in the sea.
'In de zomer' fills position 1 (whole phrase counts as one unit). Verb 'zwemmen' in position 2.
Ik eet brood en ik drink koffie.
I eat bread and I drink coffee.
Simple SVO (subject-verb-object) with no inversion. After 'en' a new main clause starts with its own SVO.
