De gebiedende wijs (imperative) is eenvoudig: gebruik de stam van het werkwoord:

InfinitiefImperatiefVoorbeeld
komenKom!Kom hier!
gaanGa!Ga zitten!
wachtenWacht!Wacht even!
luisterenLuister!Luister goed!

Beleefd (met u): Komt u binnen!, Gaat u zitten!

Learners add -t to the imperative or confuse formal/informal. 🇬🇧 English: Same concept — base form. But Dutch uses stem (which may differ from base due to spelling). 🇩🇪 Germa

Common Error Patterns

Adding -t to informal imperative

Informal imperative = stem only: Kom! not *Komt! (with -t is formal/u-form).

Kom binnen en ga zitten!

Come in and sit down!

Two imperatives: stem of 'komen' and 'gaan'. 'Zitten' is infinitive after 'ga'.

Wacht even, ik ben zo klaar.

Wait a moment, I'll be ready soon.

'Wacht' = stem of 'wachten'. 'Even' = a moment (very common softener in Dutch).

Gaat u alstublieft zitten.

Please sit down (formal).

Polite imperative with 'u': verb gets -t ending. 'Alstublieft' = please (u-form).
