Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

ხინკალი ათი ლარი ღირს.

The khinkali costs ten lari.

ბებია ოთხმოცი წლისაა.

Grandmother is eighty years old.

ორმოცდაათი წუთი მაქვს.

I have fifty minutes.

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

Numbers: the Base-20 System

1-10: ერთი, ორი, სამი, ოთხი, ხუთი, ექვსი, შვიდი, რვა, ცხრა, ათი. Teens add ათ-: თერთმეტი (11), თორმეტი (12)...

From 20 up, Georgian counts in twenties (like French quatre-vingts, but consistently): ოცი = 20, ოცდაათი = 20+10 = 30, ორმოცი = 2x20 = 40, ორმოცდაათი = 2x20+10 = 50, სამოცი = 3x20 = 60, ოთხმოცი = 4x20 = 80, ასი = 100. So 73 = სამოცდაცამეტი (3x20+13). Remember: noun stays singular after any numeral.

Practice Exercises

Building 40 as 'four-ten' - it is ორმოცი (two-twenty). Using plural nouns after numerals. Mixing up რვა (8) and ცხრა (9).

Common Error Patterns

Decimal calques instead of vigesimal forms

Drill 20/40/60/80 anchors, then build 30/50/70/90 as +10.

ხინკალი ათი ლარი ღირს.

The khinkali costs ten lari.

ათი = ten; ღირს = costs; lari is the Georgian currency.

ბებია ოთხმოცი წლისაა.

Grandmother is eighty years old.

ოთხმოცი = 4x20 = 80: the vigesimal system in action.

ორმოცდაათი წუთი მაქვს.

I have fifty minutes.

ორმოცდაათი = 2x20+10 = 50; წუთი stays singular.
