Stilregister: fünf Stimmen

One message, five registers: Amtsdeutsch, academic, journalistic, colloquial, intimate; the signals (Konjunktiv, particles, Nominalstil) and seam control

Learning Goal

I can recast one message across five German registers and switch without seams.

Look at these examples. Can you spot the grammar pattern?

„Der Antrag ist fristgerecht einzureichen" - und an die WG: „Leute, Müll runterbringen, ernsthaft jetzt."

'The application must be submitted by the deadline' - and to the flat-share: 'Guys, take the rubbish down, seriously now.'

Die Festrede endete amtlich-feierlich - und dann, mit einem Grinsen: „So, und jetzt gibt's Kuchen."

The ceremonial speech ended in solemn officialese - and then, with a grin: 'Right, and now there's cake.'

Pay attention to the highlighted parts. What do they have in common?

„Verspätung" in fünf Stimmen:

RegisterVersion
amtlichDas Eintreffen verzögert sich um voraussichtlich dreißig Minuten.
wissenschaftlichEs ist eine systematische Abweichung vom Zeitplan zu beobachten.
journalistischWieder Verspätung - und diesmal trifft es den Berufsverkehr.
umgangssprachlichIch häng schon wieder fest, sorry!
intimSchatz, zehn Minuten noch, stell schon mal den Tee auf.

Signale: Konjunktiv I + Nominalstil = offiziell; Partikeln + Ellipse + Ausklammerung = mündlich; Kosewort + Imperativ = intim. Registerfehler fallen stärker auf als Kasusfehler - und gezielte Registerbrüche sind das schärfste Stilmittel des Deutschen.

Konjunktiv/Nominalstil vs particles/ellipsis

„Der Antrag ist fristgerecht einzureichen" - und an die WG: „Leute, Müll runterbringen, ernsthaft jetzt."

'The application must be submitted by the deadline' - and to the flat-share: 'Guys, take the rubbish down, seriously now.'

Two registers, one writer, both fluent.

Die Festrede endete amtlich-feierlich - und dann, mit einem Grinsen: „So, und jetzt gibt's Kuchen."

The ceremonial speech ended in solemn officialese - and then, with a grin: 'Right, and now there's cake.'

A deliberate register break as the punchline.
